Lower Energy Costs Plus Improve the Look of Your Home Easily and Instantly

April 28th, 2011 by admin in Home Remodeling

I truly believe that caulk is wonderful, amazing thing to have and use in the home!! First, get your caulk and caulk gun. Caulk around all windows, inside and out. Include the facings, wood or brick. Around the frames also. Just this one step alone makes so much difference in keeping air both in and out.

Step 2

Next, caulk around doors, inside the hot water heater closet, inside your air conditioning unit closet, holes under the sink around the pipes. If you have alot of openings in the closet where your air conditioning unit is, your air is escaping.

Step 3

If you have any electrical outlets or light switches that do not have plate covers, get some. You would be amazed at how much air comes in around these holes.

Step 4

If you have paneling and there are large spaces (cracks) between the sheets of paneling, caulk it. You can buy colored caulk. Or alot of people are painting paneling.

Step 5

Close your blinds during the day if you aren’t at home. Especially in the summer and if the sun shines in the window. This will keep heat out. A darker house is a cooler house.

Step 6

Close off any vents in rooms that you aren’t using.

Step 7

Turn the temperature down some on your hot water heater. Do you know how much electricity it takes to heat up the water in the tank??

Step 8

Wash clothes in cold or warm water if you can. This will cut down on the electricity it takes to heat the water.

Step 9

Unplug everything not in use. Plug it back in when you need it. Everything that is plugged into an outlet is pulling electricity! You will be pleasantly surprised at how much the electric bill will go down.

Step 10

Keep your central air unit on a consistent temperature. It takes more energy to cool down a house that has heated up all day or warm up a house that has been cold all day than it does to get it to a comfortable temp and leave it alone.

Step 11

Go up into the attic and make sure that your duct work is properly sealed at the seams and no air is escaping. Also make sure that you have plenty of insulation.

Step 12

In short, caulk up every crack or seam in the house. Putty every hole and then sand the putty down. Once you have all these places sealed, you will see a big difference in your energy costs and also how much more efficient the temperature control in the house will stay.

How to Remodel a Bathroom Vanity With Wood Molding

April 27th, 2011 by admin in Home Remodeling

A standard bathroom vanity can feel bland and outdated and many home owners just replace a vanity to quickly fix the problem. This is truly a waste of money because a few simple pieces of wood molding can make a boring vanity take on an all new look. Even better, you can get this simple project done in just one day!

Purchase your Molding

Wood molding can be found at almost any home improvement store and can range from the basic to the ornate. Choose a molding that will match the style of your bathroom, while still adding interest to the vanity. For example, if you are going for a modern look in your bathroom, choose a sleek molding with clean lines. Whatever style you are trying to achieve, be sure that the molding you choose has a flat back so that you can attach it to your vanity without a problem.

Measure and Cut

Now that you have your molding home, draw a rectangle on each door on your vanity using a ruler and pencil to get straight lines. Then measure each side of the rectangle and note the length of each side. This is the measurements you are going to use to cut your molding. So, go ahead and mark your molding using these measurements.

Place your molding in your miter saw and switch the setting to a 45 degree angle. This is the angle that is needed to create a rectangle. Then turn on the saw, being careful to keep your fingers away from the moving blade, and cut through your molding at the mark that you have already made.

Attach

Once your molding has been cut to a 45 degree angle, you need to attach it to the vanity doors using wood glue or finishing nails. Wood glue is the easiest because all you have to do is apply the glue to the back of the molding, apply it to the door and let it set. However, if you want to get the job done sooner, get some finishing nails and attach the molding to the doors using a hammer. Once the molding is securely on the doors you can continue.

Stain or Paint

Now you need to make sure your molding will match your bathroom vanity. Pull out some stain or paint that will match your vanity and apply it to your molding. Being careful not to get any paint or stain where you do not intend to get it. Then just let it dry.

If you do not want to stop there, you can always add molding to the top, bottom and sides of the vanity as well using the same steps. This will give a much grander look. So if you are up for a little more work, be sure you add that same molding to the frame of your bathroom vanity. If not, all you have left to do is admire your new looking bathroom vanity.

Use Kitchen Products To Improve Appearance

Kitchen products can be prudently used for enhancing our looks and appearances. It is a good idea to take an overview of the kitchen products that can be utilized effectively for facial skin care. This not only saves few hard earned bucks but also offers us the unique guidelines to apply the natural ingredients onto our skins.

You’ve been out all day in the hot sun, your face is tanned and dark. Your eyes are puffy and tired after hours at work.

With a glam party to attend in a couple of hours, what do you do when aren’t exactly looking like lady-killer material? By using these readily available kitchen products, you can spruce up your appearance within minutes. And the price is free!

Curd and its effectiveness :

Sunburn is common in hit summers, we go for several sunscreen lotions but finally at the day’s end we find that our skin is affected. Instead of worrying or feeling bad, guys can make good use of curd. We can apply battered curd in our face and this gives a soothing feeing and brings back our skin complexion. But guys with oily skin should not go for this remedy.

Lemon Juice & Glycerine: Removing Tan and Fairness.

While curd works well to remove tan, it’s not a good option for facial skin that’s sensitive, oily or susceptible to acne. Curd, rather, all milk products contain bacteria that may aggravate the problem of acne if applied directly to the skin. So a better option for acne ridden skin is to apply lemon juice mixed with glycerine. The mixture should be strictly on a 50-50 basis. Add equal amounts of lemon juice and glycerine, apply it on the face and keep it for 15 -20 minutes, and then wash it off with cold water.

Lemon Juice : Hair Lightening

Lemon juice, because it is mildly acidic, works well in lightening the color of hair. So if you want to lighten your hair color, rinse it with a mixture of three quarter cups of water and one quarter of lemon juice. Works better than those hair coloring products.

Cucumber : Tired Eyes and Dark circles

Tired and puffy eyes make you look overworked and fatigued. So while a good long nap would be a great idea, one of the best possible quick fix solutions would be to place a slice of cucumber on each eye and relax for a 20 -25 minutes.

Tea bags:  Puffy Eyes and Foot Deodorant

Another very effective way of making tired, sore eyes sparkle with energy is to soak a tea bag in lukewarm water for a few minutes and then place one on each eye. Leave them there for about 20 minutes.

If you suffer from the infamous stinky feet syndrome, boil four to five tea bags or about three teaspoons of tea leaves in a quart of water and wait for it cool down to room temperature. Then add some cold water to the solution and soak your feet for 30 minutes. Dry your feet and apply medicated foot powder. At the height of your foot problem, follow this procedure twice a day, and once the odor is cured, do it twice a week for prevention.

Yogurt, Gram flour and Turmeric : Improving complexion

For a smooth, clear and blemish free complexion, mix three spoonfuls of curd with a single spoon of Channa (gram) flour or besan and a small teaspoon ofhaldi (turmeric). Mix to make a thick, smooth paste. Apply evenly all over the face and leave it on for twenty minutes. Rinse it off with cold water.

Black Tea Bag: Lips

Soak a bag of black tea in warm water, and press it on your lips for about 10 minutes. You can repeat the procedure as many times as you want. Black tea’s high tannin content will make your lips taut and smooth.

Coriander Leaves : Lips

Massaging your lips with the juice of Coriander leaves (dhania) will makes your lips rosy and soft.

Grated Potatoes :  Dark Circles

Potatoes contain catecholase, used as skin lighteners in cosmetics, and can also used to treat under eye circles. Grate a raw potato, squeeze the juice and apply it underneath the eyes. Leave it on for fifteen minutes and then rinse with cool water.

Instead of applying the chemicals in our skins it is prudent to make effective usage of the kitchen products. People are now trying to grab ayurvedic as an alternative option. Popularity of natural and ayurvedic treatment is uphill. So, without procrastination we can check out how effective the natural remedies are.
