How to Cheaply Keep Your House Cool
First you could use fans in place of air conditioners. The effect wont be as great but it will keep you 6 to 7 degrees cooler than without one. Close white blinds on windows facing the sun. This will prevent some of the suns heat from getting inside of the house.
Appliances and lights can give off heat. Whenever you are not using one of these items turn them off. Paint your roof white. Although most roofs are black a white roof can reflect the heat and cause the rooms in the house to be cooler. At night if there is a cool nights breeze open all the windows in the house.
Turn on the ceiling fans on low. Then in the morning when the sun comes up close the windows and blinds. This will keep the cool air circulating. If you are going to use an air conditioned be careful about it’s placement. Make sure to put it in a window not facing the sun. If you can put it in a window underneath a tree for the shade.
These steps can help you cool down your house during the winter. If for some reasonyour attic is not insulated you should do that right away. That way the cool air will stay inside rather then seeping out of the house. Try to stay on the lower levels of the house if it is a multi-level as the lower you are the cooler it will be. Do not leave windows open during the day when it is hot as it will only cause warm air to enter the house.
